Internet Service Providers : Overview of DSL Internet Service
OVERVIEW
DSL Internet Service, or (Digital Subscriber Line Internet Service) is usually available in metropolitan areas. These broadband providers are generally phone companies since DSL uses phone lines to provide service. Although DSL broadband uses phone lines, it does not interfere with regular phone service. You can browse at high speeds while still talking on the phone.
PERFORMANCE
Download speeds are typically 768 Kbps to 2000 Kbps (Kilobytes per second) or about 15 to 40 times faster than a 56K internet service. Typical DSL broadband service is Asynchronous (ADSL) since upload speeds are usually throttled back by the provider to prevent customers from running high load servers on their lines. Upload speeds are generally 128 - 384 Kbps. With DSL service you must "logon" each time you use it, but no dial up is required.
INSTALLATION
DSL broadband service can be installed using existing phone lines, but the broadband provider's technician will often install a new line for the DSL Service since many houses have older phone line wiring that is incompatible with the DSL service. Your DSL provider's equipment connects to your phone or DSL jack and to your computer using an Ethernet or USB cable. Most newer computers can accommodate these types of connections, but if yours cannot the technician can usually supply and install an ethernet card into your computer. If your DSL service uses existing phone lines, the technician may install a small electronic filter on the lines connecting to your regular phones in order to prevent interference between the DSL service and your regular phone service.
COST
Generally $35.00 to $50.00 per month. Many companies offer introductory discount lasting 3 to 6 months. Some companies will ask you to buy a the equipment (DSL broadband equipment and ethernet card, if necessary). Some will ask you to rent it. Some will simply give it to you (returned to them if you cancel). Some DSL companies offer to buy back the equipment if you cancel - some do not. Confused yet? Be sure to ask the broadband provider when you call or read the fine print when applying online.
Many companies are now offering a "Lite" DSL Service in the $25.00- $35.00 range. It is slower than regular DSL Broadband Service but fast enough for many, if not most, consumers.
TIPS
DSL performance is dependent on your physical distance from the Broadband Provider. If your home is on the edge of the the serviceable area, performance may be poor or reduced. Be sure to fully test your service before the broadband provider's technician leaves.
Be sure to evaluate all options before choosing an High Speed Internet Service Broadband Provider.
