On this date, The Great Comet of 1861 was discovered by John Tebbutt of New South Wales, Australia. It was visible to the naked eye for approximately three months. On May 13, 1917, three shepherd children first reported seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal. The date is celebrated as a holiday.
