On this day in 1965, the NASA space probe Mariner IV sent back the first close-up photographs of Mars. Live on a Florida TV broadcast of July 15, 1974, newswoman Christine Chubbock announced: "And now, in keeping with Channel 40's policy of always bringing you the latest in blood & guts, and in living color, you're going to see another first -- attempted suicide."
