Gorbachev Returning To Russian Politics With New Party

The former and last president of the collapsed Soviet Union has announced his return to Russian politics through a new political party he and billionaire banker Alexander Lebedev will form.

The planned Independent Democratic Party (IDP) to be formed by Gorbachev, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and Lebedev, an ex-deputy of the State Duma or the Russian Federation's lower house, will take part in the 2011 parliamentary elections, according to reports by the Russian media.

The IDP will challenge the ruling parties United Russia and A Just Russia as well as aim for the establishment of a national television station that will promote freedom of speech in the country.
